Guantanamo should be closed

Colin Powell:

"Essentially, we have shaken the belief the world had in America's justice system by keeping a place like Guantanamo open and creating things like the military commission. We don't need it and it is causing us far more damage than any good we get for it

"I would get rid of Guantanamo and the military commission system and use established procedures in federal law

"It's a more equitable way, and more understandable in constitutional terms"

UPDATE:

Related story per the AP:

RICHMOND, Va. - The Bush administration cannot legally detain a U.S. resident it believes is an al-Qaida sleeper agent without charging him, a divided federal appeals court ruled Monday. The court said sanctioning the indefinite detention of civilians would have "disastrous consequences for the constitution — and the country."

Well, it certainly too long enough.
Are we finally getting back to where we were supposed to be as a nation?
You know, the rule of law and all that? Quaint as those ideas are to some people.
