Delicious Mexican Food

We went to this Mexican place down in City Heights Sunday called El Borrego.
They do one thing, pretty much, and they do it right: Make roast lamb and slow cooked lamb.

Below is the bulk of our meal which was slow cooked lamb, served with the limes, onions, cilantro and a basket of 8 tortillas. And the tortillas were made fresh. As in when you order. We also had a flauta to try the flavor of the bbq lamb.

Washed all down with agua fresca (for my wife) and Mexican Coke (for me).
So much better than the crap made here..

The lamb had very interesting spices and appeared to be from the shoulder. It was beyond fork tender.

We also had a side of beans. Cooked in lard, of course.

City Heights is a gold mine for good ethnic food for cheap here in San Diego. Some of the best Vietnamese, Chinese and Mexican food.

Yummy, assembled taco ready to be destroyed below. By me. CLICK FOR LARGER PICS:

There aren't too many things I miss about California after moving to Washington, but dammit, Mexican food is one of them. They have it up here but it's pretty sad.

Man, I could NEVER live without good Mexican food.
when I lived in the San Jose area, it was also everywhere. Super Taqueria in San Jose being the top of the taco world (to me).

We're pretty fucking close to the border. Wait, San Diego County is ON the border.. :)
So there's plenty to choose from.
The key (in general) is to avoid at all costs Mexican restaurants in the 'burbs and any place that costs more than 20 bucks for a huge meal for two people.
Cheap, small and family owned is the way to go here.
Believe me, San Diego over all has a LONG way to go when it comes to food.
I drive past Red Lobster or Cheesecake Factory and actually see people standing IN LINE for that shit!!!

Mike - Do you know if Etna's is still in business on University and around, oh, 52nd or so? I used to get Italian there all the time, the later the better. I loved their pizza sauce.

The Foos are always great. That was my second time seeing them. The first time was one of those acoustic shows at the Pantages where they recorded their acoustic CD a year or so ago.

Ya real sugar in Coke, what a concept. No corn subsidies in Mexico, gee I wonder why all those poor agricultural workers sneak across the border to work on our farms here. The same people who complain about Mexicans are the
same people who support corn subsidies and are probably the same people who can't figure out why most Americans are overweight. When High Fructose Corn Syrup is cheaper than any other foods we eat, you are going to see a lot of it in cheap food.
