over 40 years of Maximum R&B
Happy Friday!
Last night we stayed up late to go see The Who at the Sports Arena here in San Diego.
This was the 5th night of this leg of their N. American and European tour 2006/2007.
Fantastic!
I have seen them several times since the first time in the 80's and they are always good live.
Pete was on fire. There is something about that first windmill he does when he starts jamming that makes it worth the price of admission.
Daltry's voice held up pretty good for an old fart and Zak Starkey did a damn fine job of channeling Keith Moon. Ringo should be proud.. :)
The main set was a mix of old and new, mostly older material. Which is funny because some of the "older" material is now from a couple of their last records of new songs that go all the way back to the 80's.
They have a lot of music to cull from, so they can't do it all (not enough off of Quadraphenia for me, as an example) but they put together a fun show.
When you include the encore (which save for the very last song was entirely from Tommy), they played for over 2 hours.
I have been to many hundreds of concerts and club shows over the last 25 years and a Who performance usually stands out. This was no exception for sure.
( for you equipment geeks, Pete is now using Fender Vibro-Kings with extension cabs )
And now more than ever, I think the following applies.
Have a great weekend!
We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again

I'm jealous. The Who puts on the best show of any band I've ever seen. Quadrophenia was the first album I ever bought.
I've never seen them live, but I have their Live At Leeds album (1970). They do some really kick-ass versions of their '60s hits. They'll probably always put on a dynamite live show no matter how old they get. It isn't time for Pete Townsend to die yet (i.e. "hope I die before I get old").
They are truly legendary. I've seen them 3 times, most recently this last October here in Seattle.
Quadrophenia, more than any other album, really locked me into loving rock 'n roll.
actually, Tom, Roger is older. he turned 63 the day of the show. :)
yea, JM, they really still do rock well.
Pete was blastin' out through a stack of Fender amps. sweet sound.
Who do they have on bass with the passing of Entwistle?
The bass duties were handled by Pino Palladino
