Bush Declares: 'We Do Not Torture'

Well, that's good to know that the Prez. feels he has to state that the US does not torture people.
By the way, looks like Bush is taking a cue from Reagan and is wearing brown suits.
Takes a hell of a president to make one yearn for the Reagan years...

Bush Declares: 'We Do Not Torture'

However, if that's the case, then why do we see this in the article:

Over White House opposition, the Senate has passed legislation banning torture. With Vice President Dick Cheney as the point man, the administration is seeking an exemption for the CIA. It was recently disclosed that the spy agency maintains a network of prisons in eastern Europe and Asia, where it holds terrorist suspects.

It would seem to me that if we do not, then it wouldn't be a problem passing this bill with the language from McCain and Feingold attached.

How is it that we are even having this conversation? The fact that we are debating this, and there is so much evidence of horrible treatment of people at the hands of the US government should make us all ill.

Ah, now we're getting somewhere:

Not only is the Republican-controlled Congress challenging an element of Bush's policy, but the Supreme Court agreed Monday to consider a challenge to the administration's handling of military tribunals for foreign terror suspects. The case, which won't be decided for months, is a major test of presidential wartime powers.

Wonder why Bush chose who he did for the Court?
This is why the most important thing a President can do during his term is get someone on the SCOTUS.
And Bush's handlers are no dummies. They know that the better they can stack that court now, the better chance they have of getting out of things should shit really start hitting the fan.
Although unless the press in this country starts to wake up a bit, who knows what will actually happen..

It's total hypocrisy. When I saw that headline, I laughed. It's like food packaging: when it's states "no artificial flavoring", it means that it actually has articifial flavoring.

How they manage to find people to take them seriously is beyond me. It's a sad statement on humanity that people actually support this government. As for me, when I hear about the low poll numbers, I want to go around screaming, "I told you so! I told you so!"

Jimmy Carter said it best the other day on MSNBC:
"I never even considered the fact that our country would be debating whether or not we could continue to torture prisoners around the world in secret prisons. This is something that's inconceivable."
