Proud to be out of touch

Not sure if you watched the Oscars last night (I'm a total dork, I watch every minute of it every year) but Clooney gave a good speech.
In fact, it's getting around the internets a little bit today, and of course on the right wing echo machine blogs and such, they don't like the part I quoted below.

“And finally, I would say that, you know, we are a little bit out of touch in Hollywood every once in a while, I think. It’s probably a good thing. [W]e’re the ones who talk about AIDS when it was just being whispered. And we talked about civil rights when it wasn’t really popular. And we, uh, you know, we bring up subjects…we are the ones…this Academy, this group of people gave Hattie McDaniel an Oscar in 1939 when blacks were still sitting in the backs of theaters. I’m proud to be a part of this Academy. I’m proud to be part of this community. I’m proud
to be out of touch."

Same here.

He was not suggesting that Hollywood is "responsible" for bringing attention to problems, but is part of the reason certain things that are uncomfortable or not popular with "mainstream" America CAN get attention.

What he said about certain issues was in fact true. A black woman winning an Academy Award when they were still getting lynched in the south is a big deal. Bringing peoples attention to things like AIDS and injustice on the big screen can in fact help change things.

Just like certain war films helped to glorify war and certain propaganda films helped the war effort during WW2, so can a movie about other things at least set a stage for conversation.

So, if I am in fact "out of touch" I'll call it OK.

You know, it's funny. As was mentioned above, hollywood has cranked out tons of right-wing movies; I mean TONS of them. The war movies, the westerns, cop movies, all kinds of right-wing movies. Why don't they mention all those? Because the right's idea of "fair and balanced" is for them to achieve absolute monopoly.
