Yea, this is such a shock:

Meirs Withdraws Nomination.

Gee, I can't imagine why.

In a letter to Bush released by the White House, Miers said she was concerned that the Senate confirmation process "presents a burden for the White House and our staff that is not in the best interest of the country."

It's my opinion that maybe early in 2005 Bush would have been able to get this crony of his into the court, but not right now.
Not with a base that at present really only consists of the most hardcore Neo-Cons.

Bush said in a statement he reluctantly accepted her withdrawal and would move in a timely manner to fill the vacancy left open by the pending retirement of Supreme Court Justice
Sandra Day O'Connor.

Who knows what kind of freak is going to be next, but I'm guessing that Bush will have to choose someone that can withstand a fight in the Senate.
When it comes to "political capital", I think the Democrats have a little more now with Bush polling below Nixon.

well, i don't mean to begrudge anyone -- even someone i don't consider qualified for a job. so i'll just say that her letter sounded so sad & difficult to write.

now on to the begrudging -- are you really surprised that an entirely unqualified president has made it a habit to appoint entirely unqualified people for key positions? it's like a greek tragedy unfolding, where one mistake begets another, begets another, begets...
