One less Clear Channel FM station in San Diego
Last week marked the first week that old time 91X FM (rock station, modern rock, whatever you want to call it) went on the air as NOT a Clear Channel station since 1999.
According to this story, it's a change in FCC rules that is forcing CC to divest itself of south of the border stations.
Their transmitter is across the border in Mexico, but their offices are here in San Diego.
It's a nice thing to hear. We need MORE independent stations, even if they are just music.
We really had only one decent independent good rock station (though there is a "Classic Rock" station). That's it. And it's a good one called FM94.9.
From what I understand, 91X was quite a station at the time when it first arrived in 1983, because they were playing things OTHER than Zeppelin, George Thoroughgood, etc.. getting more into the groove with ska, new wave and punk. Elvis Costello rather than the Scorpions.
I wish them good luck. Now that they are NOT a Clear Channel station, I will be switching back and forth more often.
Sorry for the late "good going!" but I wanted to make sure I got a comment in.
