Hurricane George and the assault on working people
In the passing days since hurricane Katrina (sure to go down in history even more so than Andrew and Camile before her) the federal government under GWB has promised pretty much a blank check to get things back to normal.
Those blank checks, grabbed up by no-bid contractors will go towards rebuilding that part of the country, not the least of which will be the port of New Orleans and the city itself.
But at what cost to the working people in the area?
And anyone that earns a paycheck is a "working person" no matter what it is you do for that paycheck.
Just about in the dark of night, Bush suspended the Davis-Bacon Act of 1931 that demands that contractors working federal jobs pay the prevailing wage to workers.
Also under the radar days later, Homeland Security announced that it will not apply sanctions to employers hiring people who cannot provide proper documentation.
Huh?
These two actions by the Feds are slaps in the face of working people EVERYWHERE, not just in the Gulf region.
In general, I am not opposed to the idea of people coming here from other countries to work, particularly under the following conditions:
One, when we are close to full employment and there is a shortage of people to do the jobs that most Americans are not willing to do like pick strawberries and clean the bathroom in office buildings.
Two, when fair wages are being paid to everyone.
Three, companies go out of their way to hire immigrants properly, those with the documentation that proves they are here legally.
Four, no matter who they are, Mexicans in the fields or whoever, they are given proper working conditions which we all take for granted.
In the Gulf region now, most of these are not the case.
The Feds are basically guaranteeing an unending supply of slave labor, both American Born and the flood that there will be coming in from the south to take advantage of this.
And the beauty of these actions to the Bush supporters that are rich is obvious: more profit in their pockets.
What will also happen is that the mostly Mexican labor that will stream across the border will be the target of further vitroil both in their face and by the right wing in the media.
What's amazing to me is that the people that scream about illegal immigration the most are usually Bush supporters.
Neither of the two groups will even begin to understand the irony.

Interesting point, Mike. There is just no end to this administration's hypocricies.
On another note, did you catch Real Time this week? Bill Maher had a new rule and a funny follow up about rebuilding New Orleans in Kansas. Very funny stuff.
